Salamanders were once believed to have magical properties of flame resistence to the extent that not only could they survive sitting in the middle of a fire, their bodies' innate coldness would eventually extinguish even the fiercest of flames. It was said their skin was made into a flame proof cloth in India... and it was also said they'd poison any apple tree or well they explored!
