Picot and Company

When I first ran across the story of Theophilus Picot fighting off the squid, the version I found was very different from what the facts eventually dictated. This first version told of Picot and another fisherman, along with Picot's twelve year old son, all encountering the squid together. In this story, it was Picot's son that cut off the animal's tentacle; so that's what I drew.

Then I found the earliest sources for the story and discovered Picot had been on the boat alone when the event occurred. Oy.

So this particular illustration was set aside for the simple reason that I got the story wrong on the first try!
